The Challenge
Hotel Phoenicia, Malta
The historic Hotel Phoenicia faced a major accessibility challenge. Their previous platform lift had been out of order for years, leaving guests with limited mobility access to the entrance. The hotel management needed a reliable, aesthetically cohesive solution that would seamlessly blend with the hotel’s elegant facade while maintaining functionality.
The project also posed a significant structural challenge. Initial plans indicated a solid concrete base under the entrance stairs, but once work began, a void was discovered beneath the steps instead. This required additional structural reinforcements, including a newly built supporting wall from the basement level.
The Solution
FlexStep
Carmelo Farrugia Melfar Ltd. recommended the FlexStep, a unique 2-in-1 staircase and lift solution, as the ideal replacement for the defunct lift. The custom-built FlexStep was designed to integrate seamlessly with the hotel's architecture.
Key features of this installation included:

Custom color matches the hotel’s window frames and wrought iron railings.

Stone slab covering the steps to match the existing entrance stairs.

Space-saving design, eliminating the need for a separate lift platform while maintaining the full functionality of a traditional staircase.

Enhanced safety features, installing a custom brass handrail to address small safety gaps.
The Results
After overcoming various challenges, including the need for additional structural reinforcements, the FlexStep was successfully installed. The project was executed during the hotel's low season to minimize disruptions, with careful planning ensuring safe access for guests throughout the process.
Both the Chief Engineer and General Manager of Hotel Phoenicia expressed their satisfaction with the result, praising the high-quality workmanship delivered by Carmelo Farrugia Melfar Ltd.
